OVERVIEW

A lighting upgrade at category B HMP Risley was used as trial for improvements across the Amey-managed prison estate.

This £1.35 million LED upgrade covered 90% of the prison, giving an indicative ROI of around 7.7 years and carbon savings of 538 tonnes a year.

Working with supply chain partners, Amey designed a bespoke solution to convert the existing metal halide and sodium SON fixtures and retrofit 5,500 units of the prisons existing lighting stock with energy-efficient LED lighting. The upgrade – involving the ‘change out’ of 5,500 fittings - supported the ‘clean and decent’ agenda and was delivered in only three months.

BENEFITS

This delivered impressive cost and environmental benefits including: • Lower energy costs, saving around more than £169,000 per year

  • A 583 tonne reduction in carbon emissions per annum
  • A 50% reduction in lighting maintenance costs with new fittings lasting more than 10 times longer

Other tangible benefits include improved reliability, safety and security benefits and a reduction in vandalism and associated costs because new LED fittings are harder to damage.
